How to Land Your First Brand Deal as a College Student

No followers needed. Here's how college students land their first paid brand deal: what GIGs pay, what brands screen for, and how to apply.

To land your first paid brand deal as a college student, you need three things: a profile that shows a brand what you can actually do, a short list of GIGs that match your real skills and campus, and an application that leads with specifics instead of enthusiasm. You don't need a big following, a marketing degree, or an internship already on your resume. On H\FC, students have earned anywhere from $550 on a single GIG to $18,800 across a year of brand work, most of them starting with zero brand experience.

🎯 What is a GIG?

A GIG is a paid, project-based assignment a company hires a college student to complete including content creation, campus ambassador work, product testing, or event activation. Unlike an internship, a GIG has a defined scope, a set payout, and a short timeline, so you can stack several across a semester.

On H\FC there are two sizes: microGIGs (quick paid tasks with instant pay like product feedback, surveys, app installs) and GIGs (resume-worthy roles with brands like Uber, Sun Bum, poppi, Steve Madden, and Aquaphor).

📱 Do you need a big following to get a brand deal?

No. Follower count is one of the least important things brands screen for, and plenty of GIGs (product testing, ambassador work, events, paid research) don't look at your social accounts at all.

This is the biggest myth costing students their first GIG. Brands hiring student creators want engagement and authenticity, not reach: 64% of marketers have already partnered with micro influencers, and 47% say that tier delivers their strongest campaign results. A student with 1,200 followers who actually knows their campus beats a stranger with 100,000.

What they're really screening for: can you deliver on time, do you know the audience they're paying to reach, and can you communicate like a professional.

🚀 How do you land your first brand deal?

1️⃣ Build a profile that reads like a portfolio. Your B\Card is what a brand's marketing team actually sees. Fill in every field (skills you'd use on a GIG, your campus, clubs, niche, resume) and add your three best pieces of content to your portfolio. An empty profile is the fastest way to get skipped.

2️⃣ Lead with proof, not passion. "I love poppi and would be a great ambassador" tells a brand nothing. "I'm at Alabama, I run our 4,000-member Greek life account, and I can put poppi in front of 800+ students at our tailgate on Sept 12" tells them everything. Name the deliverable, the timeline, and the channel every time.

3️⃣ Apply the day it posts. GIGs fill on a first-qualified basis and brands close applications once they have enough strong candidates. Turn on notifications and treat a new listing in your category as a same-day task.

4️⃣ Over-deliver on GIG #1, then ask for the next one. Submit early, hand over more than the brief required, and ask your brand contact about upcoming campaigns. Repeat GIGs and referrals are how $550 becomes $18,800

💵 How do you get paid?

H\FC pays through Stripe, and payments take 5-7 business days after the payment date to hit your account. Earn more than $600 in a calendar year and you'll get a 1099-NEC, GIG income is self-employment income, so set aside a portion for taxes. And you don't have to be currently enrolled to apply; just check the listing has no school or graduation requirement.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need followers to get a brand deal? No. Product testing, brand ambassador roles, campus events, and paid research have no follower requirement at all. For content GIGs, brands weigh engagement, reliability, and audience fit far more heavily than follower count.

How much does a first brand deal pay for a college student? Most first GIGs pay in the low hundreds for a one-time project. Real listings on H\FC have included $100 for product testing, $30/hour for ambassador work, and $200-$1,500/month for content creation.

How do I find legitimate paid brand deals as a student? Use a platform that vets the brands and handles payment instead of DMing companies cold. On H\FC every GIG is a paid listing from a real brand with the payout stated upfront and payment through Stripe, so you know the rate before you apply.

Can I do brand deals with a full course load? Yes. GIGs are project-based with defined scopes, so most students stack a few per semester. microGIGs take minutes, and content GIGs are a set number of deliverables per month rather than fixed hours.

Do brand deals count as real experience on a resume? Yes list the brand, the deliverables, and the results. It's paid work for a named company, and students have converted GIG work into full-time offers.
