I painted a canvas that included the phrase “Woman Power,” and an illustration of the female reproductive system, with flowers representing the ovaries and uterus and a stem and leaves representing the cervix and the vagina canal. The term, “Woman Power” represents empowerment, self-sufficiency, and independence among women, the power they have to create life, as well as the ability to make their own decisions for their own personal and social development. The illustration of flowers as the ovaries symbolize the beginning of human life, and if one is conscious and takes proper care of them they will blossom like a flower. The depiction of a flower as the uterus symbolizes the very beauty of human life, and how the “world” is held within a woman’s womb. The stem and leaves represent the cervix and vaginal canal, which serves as a passageway for the infant during childbirth and for male sperm cells to enter the uterus. My choice of pastel colors also represents women's delicate, calm, and soft nature. The psychology behind the pink and white details in the flowers represents simplicity, emotions, and romanticism. This canvas conveys the uniqueness and beauty of femininity. I chose flowers as a metaphorical subject in my paintings to address the beauty in the creation of human life, and the feelings and emotions related to the subject of female sexuality. I also want women who struggle with sexual expression and acceptance to think about not only in creating life but also the ability to design the life we want, and overall all the power we have as women. I also want to empower women by enhancing their sense of self-worth, and the power within themselves. Some ways I empower myself as a woman is by getting out of my comfort zone, reminding myself I’m self-reliant, believing in myself, and constantly reminding myself about my self-worth.
