Tell me about a time you noticed something wasn’t working well in a shared space or team environment. What did you do to fix it?

While working as a private chef for a startup, I noticed the office coffee station was underused because many employees didn’t know how to operate the machine, so they were bringing in outside coffee instead. This created unnecessary cost for employees and meant a shared office resource wasn’t adding value. I took the initiative to give quick, informal tutorials on how to make common drinks like lattes and Americanos, and I checked in with team members afterward to understand what would make the space more functional for them. The main feedback was that people wanted flavored options. As an immediate solution, I showed them how to make a simple vanilla syrup using ingredients we already had, and then I proposed stocking syrups through the office manager for a longer-term fix. Within a week, the coffee station became a regularly used gathering point, and employees were more likely to take short breaks together there. It turned an underutilized space into something that supported both daily routines and team connection.

How would you help make someone feel welcome and comfortable on their first day in a new office?

I think that creating a welcoming first day starts with being intentional and approachable. I would greet the new team member with a warm introduction and take time to learn a bit about them so they feel seen as a person, not just a new hire. I’d offer to walk them through the office layout, explain how shared spaces work, and introduce them to colleagues so they have friendly faces to connect with throughout the day. I believe that small gestures go a long way, so I would also make sure they know where to find essentials like coffee, supplies, and key resources, and offer to grab a drink with them so they don’t have to navigate those details alone. Most importantly, I would let them know I’m available for any questions, whether about logistics, team culture, or day-to-day routines, so they feel supported as they get settled. My goal would be for them to leave their first day feeling included, confident, and excited to be part of the team.
