While I do not possess much sales experience, aside from working as a barista, I do work as a freelance makeup artist at my college campus. I strive to recommend brands and tips to my clientele and further increase their beauty knowledge through what I have learned myself over the years. I would say that by listening to the concerns of the people I work with, their skin type, and asking them their beauty routines, I am able to persuade them by discussing the pros and cons of various products. In particular, I know several of my fellow women of color stray away from color correcting, or do not know how to do it. As a result, they typically end up with ashy or gray colored makeup. I use myself as a canvas, and show them how to prevent this from happening and make them more comfortable color correcting. I think relatability plays a big factor in communication skills, even if you cannot relate, simply having empathy and translating understanding can get clients to open up to you and then I would have the opportunity to assist, persuade, or teach them.
