How would you talk to other students about sensitive topics like money habits?

Lead with your own story first — vulnerability opens the door. Say "I used to be terrible with money" before asking anyone else to share. Make it feel like a normal conversation, not an intervention. Use casual language, not financial jargon. Ask questions like "what's the most confusing thing about managing money?" instead of "do you budget?" Frame it around feelings, not numbers — most money stress is emotional. Normalize that nobody really taught us this stuff. Keep it a two-way conversation, not a lecture. Never make someone feel judged for where they are financially. The goal is to make them feel less alone, not more informed.

what do you think brands get wrong about engaging with students?

Brands talk at students instead of with them. They lead with the brand story nobody asked for. They assume free stuff alone builds loyalty — it doesn't. They use language that feels corporate and out of touch. They show up once and disappear, expecting lasting impact. They target "students" as one group instead of recognizing how different a first-year is from a final-year. They focus on impressions and footfall over real conversation. They underestimate how quickly students can spot inauthenticity. The best brands act like peers, not sponsors.

How would you engage a student passing by a tabling event to stop and learn more?

Start with a question that feels personal to them, like "Hey, have you ever struggled with [problem you solve]?" — this makes them feel seen rather than sold to. Have something visually interesting on the table, whether it's a live demo, bold signage, or even free snacks, since people naturally slow down for curiosity. Lead with what's in it for them rather than describing your club or org, so something like "we help students land internships" lands much better than a formal introduction. Keep your ask small and low-pressure — just invite them to take a quick look rather than pushing them to sign up on the spot. Most importantly, stand up, stay energetic, and make eye contact, because your body language draws people in before you even say a word.
