Dendrochronology is an archaeological method that uses trees to get a better sense of the past. In 1964, dendrochronologist Donald Rusk Currey failed to use the corkscrew method to get a good sample from a tree and decided to cut it down. He ended up cutting down that oldest tree found at that time and was forced out of the field due to the extreme amount of hate he received from the archaeology community.
