In my various experiences in customer service, both in-person and online, I learned how to navigate and respond to changing needs and demands of customers. For example, when I was a virtual Archway Mentor for McMaster University, I helped encourage first year students with the difficult transition from high school to university. Not only is this transition challenging on its own, but they were also doing it among a global pandemic, where they couldn't just "go out and make friends" in person. I was able to relate to them having gone through the transition myself while also coach them with tips and tricks to get through university. As for my experience building strong relationships in person, I believe my experience as a lifeguard taught me the most. When it came to the last lesson, parents (naturally) hoped that their child passed. When they didn't, some lifeguards would just give the child the report card and go to the next class. I made sure to take my time building strong relationships with all the parents so they understood the reasoning behind my decisions to pass their child or not.
