As a stylist at Banana Republic, I had a quota to add four people to my book weekly. To do this, I had to get to know the customer on a personal level. I liked to learn about their taste in clothing, but also them as a person. What was their job? Do they have a family? How is the cat that they took to the vet last week? Building relationships with clients makes the experience enjoyable for both of us. As a Pilates instructor, I must build personal relationships with the clients I see weekly. Having a quick catch-up before or after class makes the experience not just a workout, but a place to go for human connection.
