Last year, I held a position as an officer of a club. Part of my duties involved planning events alongside other officers. During once instance, we had to deliver an event that the club had traditionally done year after year. The easiest and most convenient choice was to repeat the same beats and materials as the year prior. I think what many people, myself included, fall into is lull of checking boxes and continually doing what was. Noticing the event was veering in such a direction, I requested a recess to ask them more explicitly what they personally wanted to see out of the event. I asked them further what was the reason they chose to be in a position where their decisions matter. It is our obligation to deliver an event that the general public would enjoy, but we also owe it to ourselves to ask ourselves what made us special to be sitting in our officer positions, that everyone could follow steps and beats of the previous year. From that, we decided to drop many features of the event that seemed dated and updated other parts to meet a more digitally receptive audience.
