Interview Questions
Barksdale Control Products
Excel Analyst Intern

What experience do you have completing high level excel analysis?
I’ve had several experiences completing high-level Excel analysis through a combination of coursework, internships, and research projects at Indiana University. In my Strategic Management, Retail Management, and Human Development classes abroad in Barcelona, I used Excel to compare the globalization strategies of major retailers like Zara and Walmart. I created pivot tables, data visualizations, and comparison models that tracked market growth, supply chain efficiency, and localization tactics. I also used excel as a tool to conduct research from local hospitals and schools in the Barcelona area. At Indiana University, I’ve taken business and marketing courses where Excel was a core tool for data analysis. In classes like Marketing Research and Business Analytics, I worked on projects that involved cleaning large datasets, using formulas like VLOOKUP and INDEX-MATCH, and building dashboards for consumer insight reports. Through club involvement — particularly with case competition teams and consulting-based organizations — I also worked on real-world business scenarios that required analyzing industry trends, customer behavior, and operational KPIs using Excel. In addition, during my internship at Sallie Home, I applied Excel to track sales patterns, monitor inventory, and prepare weekly performance summaries. These combined experiences have helped me develop a strong analytical foundation and the ability to turn raw data into strategic insights.

What do you know about out Barksdale product line ( So in summary someone who know FLOW, PRESSURE, TEMPERATURE & LEVEL instrumentation)?
As an aspiring Excel Analyst Intern, I’ve taken time to understand Barksdale’s product line, which supports critical industrial processes through instrumentation for flow, pressure, temperature, and level control. Their products, like the BPS3000 pressure switch and BTS3000 temperature controller, generate valuable data that supports operational efficiency and safety. I’m particularly interested in how data from these devices can be tracked, analyzed, and visualized using tools like Excel to drive better decision-making and performance monitoring. I’d be excited to support Barksdale by transforming raw data into actionable insights through structured reports and dashboards.

Can you provide an example of a report you created using Excel?
Recently I studied abroad in Barcelona, Spain and was able to take classes and also conduct research projects within many different classes I took. In my Strategic Management class I took while studying abroad in Barcelona, I created a detailed Excel report analyzing the globalization strategies of retail stores in Spain and the U.S. The report compared brands like ZARA and Walmart, focusing on how each adapted to international markets through supply chain models, pricing, localization, and consumer behavior. Using Excel, I built side-by-side comparison tables and charts to visualize key metrics like store count by country, revenue growth, and market entry timelines. I also used conditional formatting to highlight trends and pivot tables to organize qualitative data from case studies. The final report helped clearly communicate the strategic differences between Spanish and American retail expansion models and was part of a group presentation on global retail scalability. This project strengthened my skills in data organization, visual storytelling, and strategic analysis, all through Excel as a core tool.
