Walk me through an automated email or DM flow you have built from scratch. What platform did you use and what did it trigger off of?

I built an automated email flow using Klaviyo focused on abandoned cart recovery for a Shopify store. The trigger was when a user added products to their cart but didn’t complete the purchase within 45 minutes.

Once triggered, the user entered a 3-step automated sequence. The first email was sent within an hour, acting as a reminder with product details and a direct checkout link. If the user didn’t convert, a second email was sent after 24 hours, adding social proof like reviews and creating urgency (e.g., low stock). The final email after 48 hours included a personalized discount to encourage conversion.

I also implemented conditional logic—if the user completed the purchase at any stage, they were automatically removed from the flow. Additionally, I segmented users into new and returning customers to slightly tailor messaging.

This flow improved cart recovery rates significantly and created a fully automated, behavior-driven system that increased conversions without manual intervention

Which tools do you prefer for automating email campaigns and why?

I prefer using Mailchimp, Klaviyo, and HubSpot based on the use case. For beginners or quick setups, I like Mailchimp because it’s simple, user-friendly, and has useful AI features like send-time optimization.For e-commerce, especially with Shopify, I prefer Klaviyo because of its strong integration, advanced segmentation, and ability to create highly personalized automation flows based on user behavior.For larger or scaling businesses, I would go with HubSpot since it combines email marketing with CRM and full customer journey automation, making it easier to manage everything in one place.

How would you use AI to improve a Shopify customer journey?

To improve a Shopify customer journey using AI, I would focus on personalization, automation, and smarter decision-making. AI can enhance product discovery by showing personalized recommendations based on user behavior, helping customers quickly find relevant products. An AI-powered chatbot can provide instant support, answer queries, and guide users, reducing friction and improving trust.

AI can also optimize upselling and cross-selling by suggesting products based on browsing patterns, while predictive models help reduce cart abandonment through timely reminders and personalized offers. Post-purchase, AI-driven email and SMS campaigns can re-engage customers with tailored recommendations, increasing retention and lifetime value.
