Do you have any experience in negotiation? If not, how would you negotiate down a creator's fee?

Yes, I do have experience with negotiation. When I am not creating content for brands and working on building a professional portfolio, I am a seller on Depop, Poshmark, and Mercari (all platforms where you can buy and sell clothing). These sites allow for buyers and sellers to negotiate the price of items. And as someone who has been on both the buying and selling ends of these platforms, I have gained a good sense of how far the envelope can be pushed. To negotiate down a fee, it is important to remain respectful and to explain why the fee must be negotiated down. On the selling sites, it is easier to negotiate for a lower price when you’re helping to relieve the seller of their inventory (if the seller has a large inventory and the product has been on the market for a while, the seller will be more desperate to sell the item to free up inventory space for more profitable items).  In a similar way, it is important to inform the influencer that they will reap several benefits if they partner with your brand. For instance, a creator that may only have a few thousand followers will likely gain more exposure by partnering with a new social media site (like Retro). I’d explain that by associating themselves with a new social media site, they can be on the forefront of a push toward healthier social media. It can also be helpful to leverage the fees of similar creatives (if available). By telling a creator the amount you’ve been quoted by another similar influencer, they will be more likely to see an adjustment to their price as fair.
