How would you answer this question: What signals tell you a brand ‘gets’ Gen Z versus when they’re obviously trying too hard?

A brand that truly gets Gen Z feels natural, not forced. The biggest signal is authenticity—when a brand uses humor, trends, or slang in a way that fits its identity instead of copying what’s popular just to stay relevant. Brands that understand Gen Z also listen to their audience, interact in the comments, and aren’t afraid to be a little self-aware or imperfect. On the other hand, brands that try too hard usually overuse trends, rely on outdated references, or push messaging that feels scripted and overly polished. When everything sounds like an ad or feels like it was written by a marketing team instead of a real person, Gen Z notices immediately. The difference is whether the brand feels like it’s part of the culture—or just watching from the outside.
