What do you think is the most important piece in building online communities?

I think authenticity is the most important building block for an online community. Personally, I gravitate towards influencers who stay true to themselves and the content that excites them the most, rather than content creators who feel as if they need to “put on” to fit a certain niche or trend. Understanding your audience is important, but I also believe that when you post for yourself, the audience will come.

What do you consider when purchasing from a new brand?

When considering a new brand, unbiased feedback is most important to me. I would prefer someone who I trust or who aligns with my values and lifestyle to vouch for a brand before I buy it, and I also look at reviews that are non-incentivized before I ultimately decide on supporting that brand.

Given the abysmal statistics - why do you think more women are not angel investors?

I think the lack of women angel investors stems from the challenges they face building a professional network, and the discouragement that comes from breaking through in a male-dominated industry. Startup culture is very much a boys’ club and is steeped in both gender and similarity bias. Women are deemed uninterested, unskilled or too risk-averse to consider investment opportunities, and other investors are more keen to share their resources and knowledge with people who fit their profile of a “typical” entrepreneur. And based on the lack of prominent role models that are women, it’s clear that most networks aren’t marketing to us. There are obviously women who are more than capable of financing startups, but there’s a disparity in the resources and capital that women receive versus men.
