Music Taste Tester (July)

Do you play or study music? if so, elaborate.
Yes, I’ve studied music in a music theory class where I learned the basics like reading sheet music, understanding scales, chords, and rhythm. I also learned how to play some piano, which helped me apply what I was learning in class. It was a great way to connect the theory to actual music, and it gave me a deeper appreciation for how songs are structured.

How do you define and measure success for a social media account?
I define success for a social media account by how well it meets its specific goals—whether that’s increasing brand awareness, driving traffic, growing a community, or boosting conversions. Success isn’t just about going viral; it’s about building consistent value and engagement over time. To measure it, I look at both quantitative and qualitative metrics: Engagement rate (likes, comments, shares, saves) to assess how content resonates with the audience Reach and impressions to understand visibility and growth Follower growth rate to see if we’re attracting and retaining the right audience Click-through rates and conversions if there’s a call to action like signing up or purchasing Audience sentiment and feedback, especially in comments and DMs, to gauge brand perception I also use platform analytics and tools like Meta Business Suite, TikTok Analytics, or even Google Analytics if tracking external traffic. Success should always tie back to the account’s goals, and I regularly evaluate and adjust strategy based on what the data shows.

Can you walk us through a successful social media campaign you've managed in the past?
Absolutely. One successful campaign I helped manage was a week-long Instagram and TikTok push for a campus club event. Our goal was to boost attendance and create buzz around a student-led art showcase. I started by identifying the key audience—mainly students interested in art and culture. We created a content calendar with countdown posts, behind-the-scenes videos, and short clips of featured artists using trending sounds. To increase reach, we encouraged participating artists to repost and tag us, and we used location tags and niche hashtags like #SLOartscene and #CalPolyCreatives. The most effective piece of content was a TikTok using a trending audio that gave a quick, funny preview of the event setup—it got over 10K views and drove a noticeable spike in RSVPs. Overall, we increased page engagement by 60% that week, and the event turnout exceeded our original estimate by 40%. What made it successful was staying on top of trends, being consistent with posting, and creating content that felt authentic and community-driven.
