One of my first friends at Michigan was my nail technician, Katy. She gave me a newfound purpose at her salon. During our bi-weekly appointment, she showed me her business Instagram and was displeased with how it looked. I offered to create a strategic marketing plan which consisted of a new logo, business card, curated feed, highlights, and a Tik Tok account to showcase her talent and love for her craft. Despite relying only on my self-taught marketing skills, she was impressed and referred me to her boss, Camilia. Not only did Camilia ask me to run her salon’s social media platforms, but she also offered me a job to be a receptionist at the salon. I defined success in these roles by saying yes to an opportunity that placed me outside of my comfort zone and pushed me to learn and grow in the marketing field.
