Yes I have created user generated content before and it was about an app aswell,I used the same tactics and the results very pretty good! It drew the attention of around 100-400 people at the starting stage and it grew up to 4000-7000 people.

What ideas do you have for creating engaging content for an app?
I have some ideas and those are showing how you can make your own emojis when the same normal emojis feel repetitive. I'll also use interactive voice and visuals to make users engaged,I'll also use editing type of content to show the advantages in a creative way.
