You’ve been putting yourself out there, applying for GIGs, and waiting for that exciting “You’re hired!” email—but it’s just not happening. You’ve got the motivation, the skills, and the drive, so what gives?
Chances are, your application isn’t grabbing attention the way it should. But don’t stress—we’ve got your back! Here are some key tips to make your GIG applications stand out and boost your chances of landing that next big opportunity!
1️⃣ Provide Direct Links to Your Socials and Portfolio
This might sound simple, but trust us, it makes a huge difference. When you're applying for GIGs (especially in the influencer, creative, or marketing space), brands want to check out your social presence. But don’t just leave them with your social media handle and hope for the best. Always include the full link to your profiles.
For example, instead of just writing “@haileyjones,” include the full URL (hyperlinked if possible!)—something like "instagram.com/haileyjones"—so it’s super easy for brands to access. This small detail can save time for the brand and show them that you’re organized and professional. If you have a portfolio, website, or blog, link to that too! Brands love to be able to easily see the work you’ve done. Your H\FC B Card should also have all your socials and portfolio links included so everything’s in one spot. This makes it way easier for brands to check out your work, which will get you closer to that next GIG!
2️⃣ Complete Your Resume
A solid resume isn’t just for your post-college job hunt—it’s a must when applying for GIGs too! Even if you're just starting out, attaching a complete resume to your GIG applications shows that you’re serious and have put thought into your application.
Make sure your resume highlights relevant experience, even if it’s volunteer work or projects from school. You may not have worked at a Fortune 500 company (yet), but showing that you’ve participated in clubs, completed relevant courses, or worked on creative projects gives brands an insight into your abilities and skills.
Also, be sure to mention any achievements that could set you apart. Do you have a high engagement rate on Instagram? Put that on your resume. It’s all about showing off what you bring to the table.
Pro Tip: Tailor your resume for different types of GIGs! For example, you’ll want a resume specifically for content creation, one for influencer roles, and another for events or brand ambassador positions. Customizing your resume for each role helps highlight the most relevant skills and experiences. And, to keep everything organized, our Resume Studio can help you build and maintain multiple tailored resumes so you’re always ready to apply!
3️⃣ Be Detailed About Your Campus Connections
When brands ask about your connections on campus, don’t just give a vague answer like “I am an active student on campus.” Go a little deeper and be specific! Brands are looking for how you can help promote their product or service on campus, and that means having strong ties and involvement with student organizations and organizations on campus
Here’s what you need to do:
Name a few specific organizations or clubs you’re part of and explain what they do.
Example: “I am a member of the Women in Business Club at XYZ University, where I am one of XX women who meet every XX. The Women in Business Club is [explain club]."
Share how you’ve been involved and how that can tie into the brand's goals (e.g., you could host an event with the club where the brand gets exposure).
Mention any campus leaders, influencers, or event planners you’re connected with. If you have relationships with people who can help amplify the brand’s presence, highlight that.
The more you show how you can create opportunities for the brand on campus, the more likely they’ll see you as someone who can make an impact.
4️⃣ Show Your Enthusiasm and Unique Voice
Brands want to know that you’re genuinely excited about the opportunity to work with them, not just checking a box. So, let your personality shine through in your applications! Whether you’re applying for a social media GIG that aligns perfectly with your career path or working with one of your favorite brands, share why you’re passionate about the GIG and what makes you excited about the potential of working with them.
Also, don’t be afraid to be authentic. Brands use H\FC because they know that college students bring fresh, innovative ideas, and brands love that! So, be yourself and show the brand what you can uniquely offer. Whether it’s campus-specific marketing strategies, community engagement ideas, or fresh content creation concepts, share what sets you apart from the crowd.
Final Thoughts: Keep Improving and Stay Persistent
Just like any job search, it's important to remember when applying for GIGs that not every opportunity is going to work out! The key is to stay persistent. By following these steps, you’ll boost your chances, make your applications stand out, and get closer to landing the right GIGs for you!
